Sequoia and Kings Canyon

Sequoia and Kings Canyon

After a long long drive we left the desert behind and started to drive to the mountains. Gone was the yellow and brown earth replaced by greenery. As we entered the sequoia park we started to climb. The first oddity we found was Tunnel Rock. In the old days the road use to go through this, then a truck got stuck and they built the road around it.

We were taking our time stopping off to look at the waterfalls and mountains of the Sierra Nervada.

Soon we got our first sight of Moro Rock, more about that later.

Up and up we went. It was just like alps, Betsy would make it up these roads. The Americans on the other hand crawled up them.

Halfway up the hill we pulled in to give Jeep a rest and take in the views. You will never guess what we saw. A proper motorhome all the way from Germany. They got it there by putting it on a boat at Hamburg and picking it up at Halifax. Maybe we can come here with Betsy?

We continued our expedition up the mountain, soon we were above 4000 feet. Well things change the higher up you get. Poppy you have never seen trees the size these ones.

Then we came across the largest tree in the world. It’s called the General Sherman. This photo doesn’t do it justice.

The road to and from the park follows a river unlike the desert water everywhere.

In the forest sometimes the Americans get innovative when it comes to laying roads. This is tunnel log.

Eventually we came face to face with the devastation caused by the Californian wild fire. Miles and miles of charred burnt up forests. Only matchsticks remain.

We turned back to get to Moro Rock. We were told you get great views from the top. Well jeep found a place to rest and we hopped out. Poppy you would have loved this, 400 steps all the way to the top. The views were really good.

Finally we visited Kings Canyon where the world largest sequoia grove is. They use sequoias for everything. Even the fallen ones get hollowed out and are used as a bridge.

Here is where the Nation’s (America) Christmas Tree lives. It’s called the General Grant.

Heading to Yosemite next send you a postcard from there.
